Summer 2017 Assignment

Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton

A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen

How to Read Literature Like a Professor: A Lively and Entertaining Guide to Reading Between the Lines, Revised Edition by Thomas C. Foster

  1. In one document, summarize each chapter of Foster’s book in 3-5 sentences.
  2. Read Ethan Frome and compose five, one-page mini essays in which you relate elements of Ethan Frome to five of Foster’s chapters.  In each essay, analyze the novel using the literary techniques you learned from that particular chapter of Foster’s text.  Discuss the application to your novel by using specific textual evidence from both books to support your interpretation. State your thesis and jump right into analysis; full introductions are unnecessary for these mini-essays. Quotes should be embedded properly and cited according to MLA style. Please follow all MLA conventions, including double spacing, 11 pt font, and 1 inch margins.
  3. Read A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen and follow the same directions for the Ethan Frome assignment—but compose only three, one-page mini essays based on three of Foster’s chapters.
