Course description:
Welcome to US History I / Intro to Psychology. In this class we practice academic freedom. We both have the right to challenge each other on facts and or opinions and do so without any prejudice or malice toward each other.  Dialog is necessary for any academic setting and I encourage you to challenge each other and myself.  Also, in the class we will travel from the Spanish acquisition of land in the new world to the period of Reconstruction after the Civil War.

Course Objective: The primary objective is to prepare you to have skills and knowledge for US History II. We focus on academic skills, writing, time management and inter-personal communication skills. Small and large group discussions are a part of classroom learning.  All students are expected to participate in them. This course is writing intensive. You will regularly practice your writing skills. In-class research essays, participation, tests and projects make up a majority of your quarter grade.

Our class in U.S History moves very quickly and covers a lot of material. Therefore, it is important that students keep pace with the course, ask questions and seek additional help when needed.  Mr. Eliopoulos is willing to meet with students before school during 0 Period any day during the week and by appointment after school.

By the end of this year, you will:

  • Demonstrate and strengthen your ability to write formal essays/research papers.
  • Strengthen your note-taking skills.
  • Compare/contrast/synthesize and analyze information.
  • Exercise critical thinking and communication skills in formal and informal discussions.

You need have the following in class everyday:

Textbook / Chromebook
Blue or Black ink pens and pencils.
Colored Pencils and Markers
Notebook or three-ring binder for taking notes
A folder for handouts

 

Active participation and preparedness is expected at all times!
No distracting items are allowed in the classroom (i.e. headwear, coats, backpacks, food, beverages, and electronic devices (except computers / Chromebooks or tablets for class notes).
Appropriate language will be used in the classroom—no swearing or other offensive remarks will be allowed.
You are responsible for your academic progress and communication with Mr. Eliopoulos about problems or struggles is expected from you.

HOMEWORK: POSTED ON GOOGLE CLASSROOM
All homework assignments must be completed on the scheduled due date. Unless otherwise noted, assignments are collected at the beginning of the class period. ALL LATE ASSIGNMENTS ARE ACCEPTED WITH HALF POINTS DEDUCTED. Homework assignments will vary throughout the year.

Grading:
All grading will be completed on a points system. Assignment or Test/Quizzes will lower points will weigh less then assignments with higher points.
* You will be graded for class participation. A class participation grade of 25 points can be earned if merited at the end of each quarter it will consist of 0 - 25 points.
