The Midland Park Public School District has been honored for the 11th year with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The NAMM Foundation for their outstanding support and commitment to music education. Now in its 26th year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement for providing music access and education to all students. Two awards are given each year: Best Communities for Music Education (BCME) for school districts and the Support Music Merit Award (SMMA) for individual school sites. Both reach K-12 schools and districts throughout the U.S. and offer opportunities to increase awareness and support for music programs. Over 1,000 districts and individual school sites (public, private, charter, parochial) were recognized for having the highest commitment to producing exceptional music programs. "It's no surprise to anyone in our district community that Midland Park has been so justly recognized by NAMM. The commitment of our amazing teachers, the support of our parents/guardians, the outstanding work of our students, and the critical guidance provided by our Board has reaped amazing results in musical education. The music department is has been successful due to the passionate interest of the students, dedication of the teachers and staff, strong parental involvement and continued commitment and support of the Board of Education. This was evident in our recent performance of our school musical, “Shrek” and our schedule band performance with the Ridgewood Concert Band.” said Principal Nicholas Capuano. To qualify for the Best Communities designation, Midland Park answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified by school officials and reviewed by Responses were verified by school officials and reviewed by the leading arts educational research firm, WolfBrown. This year, seven Midland Park High School students proudly took advantage of an important civic opportunity- serving as poll workers during Bergen County’s Primary Election. With a consistent need for more poll workers during both the Primary and General Elections, the Bergen County Board of Elections and local clerks have called on high school students to help fill this crucial role. Our students answered that call with enthusiasm and responsibility. To prepare, each student completed a paid training session, earning $60, and then worked an 8-hour shift on Election Day, earning an additional $160. But the value of this experience extended far beyond a paycheck. By participating in the voting process, these students gained firsthand knowledge of how elections are conducted with transparency, security, and accountability. They walked away with a stronger understanding of our democratic system and a new level of confidence in its integrity - something they are now empowered to share with their peers and community. Serving as a poll worker not only supports the local election process but also fosters responsible citizenship and leadership in our students. To be eligible to serve as a poll worker, students must: Be at least 16 years old Be a United States citizen and a resident of New Jersey Be registered to vote in Bergen County if 18 or older Not be a candidate in the election We commend our seven student volunteers for stepping up and making a meaningful impact. Their service is a shining example of the values we encourage here in Midland Park - engagement, integrity, and leadership. Make an impact. Get involved. Help shape the future - one vote at a time.

On Tuesday, May 20, Midland Park High School Seniors joined their peers at Ramsey High School for a moving and impactful presentation titled After the Fire. The program is based on the true story of a tragic dormitory fire at Seton Hall University that occurred on January 19, 2000. The fire, which was the result of arson, quickly swept through a freshman residence hall, claiming the lives of three students and injuring fifty-eight others. Two of the most severely injured survivors, Shawn Simmons and Alvaro Llanos, were freshman roommates at the time. Now, more than two decades later, they travel the country sharing their harrowing experience in hopes of educating young people on the importance of fire safety and personal responsibility. Their presentation went far beyond the details of the fire. Shawn and Alvaro shared their emotional journey of recovery and healing—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. They highlighted themes of courage, resilience, friendship, and forgiveness, leaving a lasting impression on students and staff alike. Midland Park High School was proud to partner with the Senior Class of Ramsey High School to bring this important program to our students. The After the Fire presentation not only underscores essential safety protocols but also inspires young adults to find strength in adversity and to value the relationships that carry us through difficult times. This event was a valuable reminder of the real-life consequences of seemingly small decisions—and the incredible power of the human spirit to overcome tragedy. We thank Ramsey High School for their collaboration and extend our gratitude to Shawn and Alvaro for their bravery in sharing their story.
