Read text:  How to Read Literature Like a Professor: A Lively and Entertaining Guide to Reading Between the Lines, Revised Edition by Thomas C. Foster

  • In one document, summarize, in bullet point form, the main ideas/lessons of each chapter of Foster’s book (Approximately 5 bullet points per chapter is appropriate).

Assignment 2:
Read poem:  The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
(Photocopy of poem provided by Mrs. Berninger at end of school year  OR  obtain your own copy)

  • Take notes on the presence of the theme of Crime, Punishment, and Redemption.                                   (There is a strong allusion to “Rime” in Frankenstein)

Assignment 3:

Read novel:  Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

  • Compose three, 1-2 page mini essays in which you relate elements of the novel to three of Foster’s chapters.  In each essay, analyze the novel using the literary techniques you learned from that particular chapter of Foster’s text.  Discuss the application to your novel by using specific textual evidence from both books to support your interpretation. Quotes should be embedded properly and cited according to MLA style.

Assignment 4:

Read play:  A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen

  •   Follow the same directions for the Frankenstein assignment.
